Orthonyxia

What is orthonyxia and how does it treat ingrown toenails?

The word orthonyxia is a combination of the greek or latin words, ORTHOS - meaning "correct" and ONYX - meaning "nail".

Orthonyxia corrects toenail curvature through the attachment of a spring-like device to the nail. It is more commonly referred to as nail bracing or ingrown toenail bracing. Ingrown toenails are caused by an increasingly curved toenail and the resulting pressure from each side of the nail against the skin. Orthonyxia eliminates ingrown toenail pain by correcting the curve of the toenail. It provides a recurrence rate similar to surgery while being much less costly and invasive. CurveCorrect utilizes this method for treating ingrown toenails.

The advantages of orthonyxia over traditional ingrown toenail surgical methods are:

  • Convenience
  • No pain
  • No recovery
  • Much lower cost
  • No disfigurement from permanent removal of the side of your toenail

Orthonyxia (toenail bracing) was compared to ingrown toenail surgery (partial matrix excision). 21 patients were treated with orthonyxia. 20 patients underwent surgery. After follow-up the orthonyxia group showed a 19% recurrence rate. The surgery group showed a 15% recurrence rate. The recurrence rate was slightly lower for the surgery group however the orthonyxia group experienced less pain, wore shoes sooner and required no time off from work. The surgery group required an average of 14.7 days off from work.

Orthonyxia was compared to surgery (partial matrixectomy). 105 patients were selected having 109 ingrown toenails. 51 ingrown toenails were treated with orthonyxia. 58 ingrown toenails were treated with surgery. After 12 months a follow-up was conducted. The orthonyxia group showed a 13.8% recurrence rate. The surgery group showed a 7% recurrence rate. The recurrence rate was slightly lower for the surgery group however the orthonyxia group experienced less pain, wore shoes sooner, resumed daily activities sooner, had fewer postoperative symptoms and was favored overall by patients.

Orthonyxia was compared to traditional surgical methods. 61 patients were treated with orthonyxia. After 1 week all patients reported less pain and a decrease in nail curvature. Follow-up after 10 months revealed a recurrence rate of 8.2%.

Rate of recurrence was measured using orthonyxia. 32 female and 19 male patients ages 14-73 having a total of 73 ingrown nails were treated with nail braces. 98.6% (72 of 73) ingrown nails benefited from the ingrown toenail brace treatment. 2 nails were not followed. After 3 months there was no recurrence in 59 toenails (83.1%). 12 nails (16.9%) observed recurrence.

41 patients were treated with orthonyxia. Recurrence rate, cosmetic results, pain during treatment and patient satisfaction were measured. After 6 months 81.5% did not experience recurrence. 75.6% were satisfied with the treatment. 85.4% rated the treatment painless. 75.6% rated the cosmetic results as excellent. All of the patients returned to work immediately following the application. No complications occurred.
